MALDEF is the nation's leading non-profit Latino civil rights law firm.  Founded in 1968, MALDEF works to safeguard the civil rights of Latinos and to increase the communitys ability to participate fully in American society.  We are currently seeking a Redistricting GIS Assistant in our Los Angeles office to provide technical assistance in the development and presentation of proposed redistricting plans for the Western Regional target states.

Job Responsibilities: 

Oversees Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database and is responsible for the accurate and timely updating of system data.  Using Maptitude for Redistricting software, prepares data to be used; gathers various demographic, registration, and election data and enters the data into the system; sets up and maintains office workstation where redistricting staff may draft plans; prepares maps and data materials for meetings, presentations, and public hearings; works at the direction of the National Redistricting Coordinator and the Director of Litigation to provide technical assistance to the community; works closely with MALDEF legal staff to develop proposed redistricting plans.  The Redistricting GIS Assistant travels to areas outside of Los Angeles, communicates regularly with MALDEF policy and legal staff to carry out the redistricting project in assigned region; assists in preparing weekly and quarterly reports of activities to the National Redistricting Coordinator by providing data analysis when applicable.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelors degree required.  Exceptional computer software skills required, with specific knowledge of the Windows environment, MS Excel, and database programs such as MS Access or SPSS; must also be proficient in the use GIS programs including ESRI ArcGIS at a minimum.  Expertise in Maptitude for Redistricting preferred.  The successful applicant must have the ability to work with large, complicated datasets, including importing delimited or fixed field data files into database and GIS software.  Exceptional computer troubleshooting and maintenance skills are also required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Candidates must be resourceful, punctual, and attentive to detail. Excellent communication skills required with the ability to communicate complicated technical details to the non-technically inclined.  Must be willing to travel frequently by automobile or airplane as required, including driving to various locations when necessary.  Daily access to a car, a valid California Driver License and automobile insurance required.  Due to the intense nature of the redistricting process, the work schedule for this position will often exceed the traditional 40-hour work week, and applicants must be willing and available to work evenings, weekends, and long hours. The successful candidate will have knowledge of and support for MALDEFs principles and organizational goals, as well as an understanding of how a law firm functions; the ability to prioritize workload and to meet deadlines under pressure; the ability to perform work in an office setting, requiring ordinary physical activity.

Compensation:  This position is funded for a maximum of 12 months.

$43,500 to $48,900 per year.  MALDEFs generous benefits package includes:  employer paid medical, dental, vision for employees and their eligible dependents; short and long term disability insurance; 403(b) retirement plan with employer match; 20 days of personal time (PTO) and eleven paid holidays each year.
