Data Sharing Survey Reults


The following survey was conducted by Diana McCarthy, GIS Spcialist, from the City of Fullerton.  See SoCalGIS Member List for contact information.

Data Sharing SurveyMarch, 2008
Eight agencies responded to the questionnaire.  The numbers in parenthesis indicate the number of responses to each question or statement.  Comments are statements the respondents provided which may be of interest. 

  1. Have you received requests for your agencys GIS data from private sector business?

Comments:
Requests are sent to the City Attorneys office for processing.

  1. Does your agency have distribution rights for any/all of your GIS data?

Willing to share those we own
Cant share some datasets as we dont own them
Cant share our pipeline data (2)

  1. Do you have a formal policy for distribution/sharing of GIS data?

Comments:
City of Inglewood has a GIS Ordinance
Dont like providing it to companies that repackage and market, but dont have a choice at this time
We require a formal Public Records Request which goes to City Attorney
 
  1. Do you charge a fee for your GIS data?

We charge for time spent if request is complexNo charge for data or media, have not received enough requests to develop a cost-recovery methodCharge just the cost of media if not supplied by person requesting

  1. Do you require a contract or other form of agreement (an as-is warning, etc.) from users of your GIS data?

LA County used to have an agreement, but discontinued using it when they went to a website/download center
We use a warning in the README file that is burned onto the CD

  1. Do you have datasets that you consider sensitive which you do not distribute (water delivery systems, etc.)?

Dont distribute utility data, public facilities locations
Dont release crime data, utilities
Dont release pipeline data, 
Water district data and crime data not shared


  1. How do you deliver the data to the public? (on media like a CD, through a download portal, etc.)

CD,DVD and/or e-mail (4)
CD and charge for time spent (1)
Dedicated website with quarterly updates to posted datasets (1)
