GIS TECHNICIAN
City of Santa Monica

SALARY  $4,275.00 - $5,278.00 Monthly

The City pays the employee's contribution to the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). In addition, the City participates in the Medicare portion of FICA only, and therefore there is no deduction made for social security.

NOTE: If three or more qualified City employees apply and pass the examination, a promotional list will be established in addition to an open-competitive list. If fewer than three qualified City employees pass the examination, the appointing authority, in accordance with the City's civil service rules and regulations, can decline to use a promotional list, in which case a promotional list will not be established for this position.

Major Duties
Maintains databases, configures system operational functions and prepares GIS reports for a majority of the City’s departments.

Ensures the accuracy and completeness of digital GIS maps and data files. Updates and changes data and maps as necessary. Prepares GIS maps for use by numerous departments in the City.

Assists system users in the City with new and existing applications.

Creates and configures new system enhancements for the City’s departments.

Develops policies and procedures for users.

Assists with diagnostics and repair of software systems.

Participates in professional associations, meetings and conferences regarding GIS.

Works closely with the Information Systems Division to meet the GIS needs the City’s departments.

Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of:
Geographical Information Systems.
ARC/INFO.
ARC/VIEW.
Automated systems principles.
Customer service practices.
Computer operations and software diagnostic and repair techniques.
Basic mathematics.
Effective customer service techniques.

Ability to:
Communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
Install and maintain software systems.
Perform accurate and timely data entry.
Read and comprehend technical information.
Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.
Provide customer service.

Skill in:
Using a personal computer and applicable software applications.

Education, Training and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography or a closely related field. One year of recent, paid work experience in the field of GIS. Successful completion of a GIS/Cartography certification program is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid class C driver license.
